Connecting
Artists, Researchers
and Producers

sound:frame is an interface between art and technology and is based on an interdisciplinary network of artists, researchers, institutions and producers.
It gained public recognition as the European 'festival for audiovisual expressions' and helped Vienna to become a capital of audiovisual art. Since its inception in 2007, it established a worldwide network of artists and experts in the audiovisual, immersive and interdisciplinary field.

Since 2017 sound:frame acts as an internationally networked platform for immersive art.
sound:frame realizes exhibitions, events and festival programs as well as individual commissioned artworks and discourse formats. sound:frame consults, curates and organises.

In 2021 the platform starts a new festival format: Civa – Contemporary Immersive Virtual Art
Civa aims to strengthen the potential of artistic approaches in interaction with science, technology and global society.
To this end, Civa primarily appropriates space in virtual space. A space where audiences from all over the world can meet, exchange and network. A space where digital artistic formats gain visibility.

Network

We love our strong community and enjoy working together with our far-reaching network.
In collaboration with international partners we provide stages for immersive and interdisciplinary art projects.

IMMERSIVE ART

sound:frame and Civa make current trends in immersive art and media visible and present interdisciplinary works in the context of exhibitions, stage settings and live productions.
We are interested in new approaches for Audiovisual Live Performances, Virtual and Augmented Reality installations, AI and machine learning,
Stage, Display and Experience Design.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COPRODUCTIONS

Together with multiple international partner institutions we have invited artists and researchers from different core areas to collaborate and realize new interdisciplinary works. We are able to commission artworks on a regular basis and create lab situations as breeding grounds for new artistic approaches and discourses.

outlook

Digital Transformation

We believe that art must be a strong force in accompanying, challenging and promoting new technologies and will play an important role in steering digital transformation in a direction that benefits society and has a positive impact on our future.

Immersive art
as a way of looking at the world

Together with artists, experts, scientists and producers, we discuss post-digital tendencies, technological upheavals and their impact on our society. The focus on artistic approaches and strategies is important to us. In constant exchange, collaborative experiments and without being driven by the idea of profit, we deal with structural, content-related, aesthetic and social questions. We believe in the art-way of thinking about our world.

SOUND:FRAME & CIVA

Civa

Civa, Vienna’s new media art festival, aims to strengthen the potential of artistic approaches in interaction with science, technology, and the global society. Under the title »Social Distancing – Virtual Bonding«, Civa in 2021 explores the question of how current technologies enable us to remain connected to each other on a virtual level in times of physical distance, or even to build new international networks and communities.

For this purpose, Civa – in view of the current situation of a worldwide pandemic – in 2021 particularly claims space in the virtual.
During the nine-days festival, various artistic and discursive formats will examine current media and recent technologies to see how they serve or harm and mostly how they change our society. At the core of the festival is the desire to build a strong network and to be a well-functioning platform for a growing international community.

CIVA stands for Contemporary Immersive Virtual Art. The first edition of the new Vienna media art festival will take place from February 19 to 27, 2021 and will be primarily virtual.

SOUND:FRAME

The sound:frame "Festival for audiovisual expressions" was initiated in 2007 and has been pursuing its aim of presenting and supporting audiovisual art and making it visible ever since. For ten years, sound:frame has been showing current trends in audiovisual art and culture, has invited a total of more than 650 international and national visualists, media artists, musicians, and theoreticians from more than 25 countries to Vienna and had more than 65,000 visitors. Each year, a large exhibition, several live events and a comprehensive program of workshops, screenings, and conferences have been devoted to different thematic focuses such as “LIVE,” “Collective,” or “A matter of …”
